As we continue to burn fossil fuels supplies will continue to dwindle. Burning the fossil fuels also has a detrimental effect on our environment. These two things are unavoidable and it has become increasingly important to shift from our reliance on these fuels to more cleaner sources of energy. There are numerous alternative energy sources available and the development of alternative energy technologies.

One of the most well know alternative energy technologies is solar energy. Other popular and well known alternative energy technologies include wind power – power generated through turbines that are turned by the wind; and tidal and wave energy. There are of course other renewable energy sources that are being developed, but these show the most promise when it comes to producing green power.

Solar power is fast becoming a very popular way to supply power to homes and businesses. Ever since it was developed advances in research and the technology available has made solar power more and more efficient and affordable. It is not uncommon to find solar panels on many residential and commercial buildings. Solar panels are mainly used for generating hot water and electricity, and they have the advantage that they can generate hot water and electricity during power outages. They are also used for reducing domestic energy bills in many homes. Of course, there are some disadvantages to solar power, but advances in technology means that these disadvantages are becoming less important

Another popular alternative energy technology is wind power. Wind turbines are versatile systems designed to be used almost anywhere, even in areas and countries that have little sunshine. There are many different types of wind turbines and deciding which one to choose largely depends on your energy requirements, location and area available for storing the turbine. Wind power has become such a popular source of alternative energy that whole ‘wind farms’ have been set up to produce energy on a mass scale. As with solar energy, advances are being made in research and technology to make these alternative energy sources more efficient.

A relatively new and emerging alternative energy source is marine energy. Marine energy is an umbrella term used to refer to tidal and wave energy. These systems rely on the waves or the tide to produce energy through turbines installed under the sea. Several projects around the world have looked into tidal and wave energy. The most popular construction is a tidal barrage. This is effectively a dam that stops water at high tide, and opens the gate at low tide to force water through the barrage and past the turbines. The greater the depth between high and low tide; the more energy is produced.

There are several different types of alternative energy technology available. Some are more popular than others. One thing is certain, the advances in research and technology in the alternative energy area means that these technologies will not only become more efficient, but also more affordable.
